In 1975, as the Vietnam War was ending, thousands of orphans and Amerasian children were brought to the United States as part of "Operation Babylift." Heidi Bub (a.k.a. Mai Thi Hiep), and her Vietnamese mother, Mai Thi Kim, reunite after being separated for 22 years. Heidi, a married woman with kids now living in Tennessee, had always dreamt of a joyful reunion. When she ventures to Vietnam to meet her mother, she unknowingly embarks on an emotional pilgrimage that spans decades and distance.

Workshop - Micro… what? Identifying and Overcoming Microaggressions and the APA experience
Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 5pm.  APASA Center (Nugent, Room 104)
Have you ever had a subtle and brief verbal, behavioral, or environmental encounter that felt derogatory or insulting but couldn’t put your finger on why?  It may have been a microaggression.  This workshop creates a safe space for people to identify possible microaggressions targeting Asian Pacific Americans and provides tools for how to overcome them.

Film - Killing of a Chinese Cookie

For nearly a century, people have turned to this prophetic dessert for advice, inspiration, and even winning lottery combinations. While the fortune cookie has been a source of fascination, and a Chinese cuisine staple in North America, it still remains nearly non-existent in China. This film examines the heated debate over the true origin of the fortune cookie, the mixing of western and eastern cultures that produced it, and the cookie’s rise from a simple pastry to a pop culture phenomenon.

Film - Dream in Doubt

When Rana Singh Sodhi’s brother is killed in America’s first post-9/11 revenge murder, he begins a journey to reclaim his American dream and fight the hate that continues to threaten his community. This intimate documentary of one man’s odyssey from persecution in India, to embracing America as his homeland proves that courage and hope have the power to overcome hate.

Panel - It’s All in the Mix: Interracial Relationships in APA Communities

Are issues surrounding interracial relationships a thing of the past? While interracial marriage was still illegal in certain parts of the U.S. until 1967, how far have we really come?  We invite you to engage in a panel presentation on several people’s experiences with and perspectives on interracial relationships within APA communities.

A Taste of Vietnam

Join the Vietnamese Student Association for a taste of Vietnam, and support a good cause while satisfying your taste buds.  VSA will be selling traditional Vietnamese style egg rolls in order to raise money for Hepatitis research.  Hepatitis affects a huge part of the Asian population.  Come eat, learn and celebrate our heritage!

Keynote Address - Evelyn Hu-Dehart: Barack Obama, Tiger Woods, Bobby Jindal, Alberto Fujimori:  New Faces of Asians in the Americas

Who would you nominate to be in an Asian American Hall of Fame?  Maybe the three Asian Americans in President Obama’s cabinet?  Do any women come to mind?  This keynote address by Dr. Evelyn Hu-DeHart, Director of Brown University’s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, explores the emergence of multiple new and often complex constructions of Asians across the Americas in the era of globalization.

Nazaara is the South Asian Students Cultural Association's (SASCA) 2nd Annual Charity Culture Show.  The event includes a variety of cultural performances from the region, including music, dance, and skits. The APASA YouTube Challenge
Tuesday, April 21, 2009, 5pm.  APASA Center (Nugent, Room 104)
The challenge is on. Find a YouTube video that best represents the goals of APASA for the diverse Asian/Pacific Islander/Desi American community on campus. Create or search for your favorite video (under 5 minutes) and submit it during the YouTube Challenge.  Judges will pick the top videos, but the audience will pick the winner during the event.  A Flip Camcorder will be awarded to the person with the best video. Aileen Primero Endowment Scholarship Fund Basketball Tournament

The Aileen Primero Basketball Tournament is a fundraiser to raise money for an endowment fund in Aileen's memory. Speaker - Magdalen Hsu-Li Presents: Redefinition of Identity

Join Pride Alliance and explore the search for cultural identity through the  personal story of Magdalen Hsu-Li. Magdalen is as an out, Asian American woman who grew up in the rural south and overcame obstacles such as racism, prejudice, stereotyping, homophobia, bi-phobia within the LBGT community, filial piety, and a severe disability (Tourette’s Syndrome). Come hear her story and her music.

At the UA, “Asian Pacific American” (APA) describes the vastly diverse student population who identify wholly, or in part, as having an East Asian, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander, or Desi/South Asian cultural and/or ethnic identity. Does one term fit all? How are multiple identities recognized within this term?  Hear the voices of some often-overlooked members of the “APA Community” in this engaging panel.

APA Town Hall: Finding OUR Future

What is the future of OUR diverse communities represented within the “APA” umbrella?  Through Optimism, Understanding, and Reaffirmation, we invite everyone who identifies wholly, or in part, as having an East Asian, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander, or Desi/South Asian cultural and/or ethnic identity, to come together to discuss your experiences and pertinent issues in hopes of finding a more inclusive community in OUR future.
